Our Team’s Favorite Teachers

We asked ABQ Mom Contributors who their favorite teachers were and why. Based on these stories, I think we can all conclude that a teacher’s role cannot be overstated. Check out what they had to say below.

“My favorite teacher was Ms. Wenzel for 3rd grade. Her classroom was brightly and colorfully decorated and every morning we would stand up and sing and dance to ‘The Sign’ by Ace of Base. She brought so much joy and positivity to the classroom. I’ve held that close to my heart my entire life. I later learned she passed away from a battle with cancer. I wish I could reach out to her today to share with her how much she has remained a big part of my love for learning.” -Dena Fahlquist

“I can’t even remember her name but it was my first-grade teacher. She filled me with so much confidence and really encouraged me in a way that I hadn’t been before. I remember all my other teachers always telling me to be quieter, sit still, reign in my energy . . . And this teacher instead had me channel it in all these positive ways in my life and that confident kid is still within me. I also want to say that when I was in high school I experienced severe depression. This was compounded by losing my mom. I likely would have irreparably harmed myself or lost my life if not for all the tiny micro-moments where a teacher lifted me up and made sure I knew I mattered. From a high five to giving me a sample of their favorite herbal tea to letting me linger and talk before or after school about whatever, to providing kindness when I struggled academically, to giving me a compliment or laughing at a bad joke. The list is endless, but every single time a teacher gave me extra seconds of their day, that mattered. It saved my life.” -Anonymous

“In high school, I had a very energetic biology teacher who encouraged her students to be involved by staying organized and participating in class. Every day of learning was fun because she asked questions, she provided hands on learning, and she did a lot of relatable lessons. At the end of each week, if all our assignments were submitted, she would say, ‘You have all your ducks in a row.’ This helped me stay organized and prompt in completing my assignments and studying for exams. A teacher who is involved in student learning in and out of the classroom always made a huge impact on my interest and passion to learn more.” -Fran Murphy

“I want to thank Inez Cisneros for teaching me the value of personal responsibility after I got caught putting glue on other students’ chairs in elementary school. I want to thank Robert Curdy for teaching me the value of one’s character after he embarrassed me for weeks on end when my mom invited him over to our house for Thanksgiving dinner in middle school. I want to thank Melissa Munoz for teaching me the value of commitment when I was too lazy to learn my lines so I was forced to sew costumes instead and that really sucked (even though those costumes ultimately won an award) in high school. I want to thank Nancy Baker for teaching me the value of critical thinking when passionately defending one’s position after I arrived to her class drunk ready to debate the Death Penalty in college. I would like to thank Harry Van Buren for understanding the value of Harry Potter when discussing value-based ethics in grad school. In all seriousness, each one of these educators taught me so much more than just what was in our textbooks. They taught me the value of education and the importance and value of character. Thank you so much!!!” -Steph Telles

“I had many great teachers growing up so this will be a bit general. My elementary teachers were amazing. So kind and patient. In middle school, my home economics teacher was so fun and patiently taught me how I can make things with my own hands if I focus and put time into it. In high school one of my teachers was so funny, to the point, and kind with all of our different personalities. I can still see his smile and hear him say what a good job I did on a paper I wrote and it encourages me to do my best when I think of it. My economics teacher was hilarious and a bit wild, but whenever I think of him, it reminds me to be real and work hard to do what I need to do. I’m sure there were others, but these particular ones stand out.” -Elizabeth Janiors

“My 5th grade teacher was Mrs May. She was in a wheelchair, and she was the most loving person I knew through some very transitional times of my life. I moved to a new school, and she was my new teacher. She welcomed me with open arms. I started growing boobs then, and she noticed that I wasn’t keeping up with my personal hygiene like others in my class. She helped me learn those lessons. I tried out for a school singing competition and she was a judge. I sang a song called “I’ll Walk with You.” It made Mrs May cry. I didn’t win that singing competition, but I got to the next couple rounds. Mrs May had so much love for all her students and taught us so much in that weird year of life.” -Jade Hernandez
