Swim Lessons
Swim lessons are a great way to encourage water safety. Lessons at the YMCA start at six months with the Parent/Tot classes. The goal is to introduce babies and toddlers to the water. Instructors teach techniques like blowing bubbles, kicking, and jumping into the water with the goal of submersion. These early swim lessons encourage confidence in parents and children, setting everyone up for success! No matter the age, kids will benefit from learning to swim. Swim lessons also encourage an active lifestyle and build confidence. The YMCA of Central New Mexico offers lessons for all ages, including adult swim lessons.
Safe Fun in the Sun
If you’ve ever enjoyed a dip in the pool, you’ve probably heard a lifeguard say, “No running!” Along with enforcing the no running rule, make sure kids play safe in and around the water. Adults and children should never participate in any breath holding activities. Make sure kids know not to push, shove, or be too rough with each other while playing in water. Parents should talk to kids about safe play in the water and around the pool.
Supervision
Children should always be supervised while swimming. If there is more than one adult watching a group of kids, designate a “water watcher” who keeps their eyes on swimmers at all times. If you’re swimming at a public pool, make sure everyone knows where the lifeguard is located. Inexperienced swimmers or non-swimmers should always wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket, even on a boat.
Beat the Heat
Water safety isn’t just about being in the water. Children may not think about drinking enough H20 while swimming. And on the hot summer Albuquerque days, kids need to stay well hydrated. Don’t forget apply and reapply that sunscreen! Wearing protective clothing like rash guards and hats are also encouraged.
Get Certified
Consider becoming certified in CPR. Encourage your teenagers to get Lifeguard certified. The YMCA also offers a non-certified Jr. Lifeguard class for children ages 9-14.
