Summer is on the way, which is a great time for kids to have fun, learn new skills, and make new friends. If you’re looking for a summer camp that combines creativity, storytelling, and technology, then look no further than the Southwest School of Filmmaking Summer Camps.
Did anyone else spend their summers running around with their friends and making movies?
I definitely remember nights spent on the phone making lists of props we needed and having my parents drive me around to different “filming locations,” aka, my friends’ houses. I also vividly remember calling department stores to see if they had mannequins that they were getting rid of. We all thought we would make it big. Spoiler alert, we never did.
We also didn’t have access to filmmaking and acting summer camps.
Especially those being taught by filmmakers and educators who are passionate about their craft and eager to share their knowledge and skills with the next generation of filmmakers.
Southwest School of Filmmaking Camp provides a supportive and encouraging environment for kids to learn, grow, and have fun all while learning the art and experiencing the magic of movie-making.
The two summer camps span 14 days, from July 7-July 21. They allow students to collaborate with other aspiring filmmakers and actors.
Students receive guidance from professional filmmakers while creating an original short film. At the end of these two weeks, students come together, alongside their family and friends, and view their completed films in a student showcase.
Even better, students get to screen their films in an actual theater.
Students get hands-on experience with digital cameras, sound equipment, and editing software. They will learn how to tell stories through film and discover how to use technology to bring their ideas to life.
In addition to honing their technical skills, kids will also get the chance to explore their creativity and express themselves through film. They will learn how to develop characters, create scenes, and bring their stories to life. This camp is the perfect opportunity for kids to showcase their unique perspectives and share their stories with the world.

The camps are held in the state-of-the-art Mesa Del Sol building at UNM.
Just 15 minutes from UNM’s main campus, Mesa Del Sol happens to be right across the street from Netflix. The camps are open to teenagers aged 14-18, but they can make exceptions for students as young as 13 and encourage everyone interested to apply.
