Ways to Give Back as a Family This Holiday Season

0

I’ve had the pleasure of working in community relations for almost five years. My career gives me the opportunity to connect employees with local organizations and provide them with the opportunity to give back to their communities. Most importantly, it’s shown me the importance of giving back to my local community.

Growing up, this wasn’t something I remember doing. I know my mom would donate our clothes to local organizations. But I don’t remember being an active participant in these activities. My parents still did a great job explaining to us the privilege we had to have food on the table and clothes on our back. As a parent, I want to ensure my son understands the importance of helping those in need. So I’ve put together a list of ways to give back as a family this holiday season.

Ways to Give Back as a Family This Holiday SeasonAdopt-A-Family

There are many families and children in need in Albuquerque. Many organizations put together holiday wish lists that include items such as toys, toiletries, clothing, and food. Adopting a family or child in need is a great way for the entire family to get involved, even little ones, because everyone can help select items. Here are some organizations in Albuquerque that have an adopt-a-family/child program.

Serve or Donate Meals

In New Mexico, 1 in 5 children and 1 in 8 New Mexicans are at risk of hunger. Many low-income households rely on food assistance programs, which include charitable organizations. Needless to say, there’s always an opportunity to serve or donate meals to those in need. There are a lot of organizations in Albuquerque in need of assistance. Keep in mind, serving meals is typically not appropriate for younger children so be sure to confirm age requirements.

Run/Walk for a Cause

If you are an active family, participating in a walk or run for charity may be the perfect way to give back as a family this holiday season.

Donate Clothing

The holidays bring on cooler temperatures which means many families are in need of warmer winter clothing and accessories. There are a variety of organizations, schools, and churches that collect clothing each year. Some organizations collect clothing year round.

This is only a small sample of ways you can give back as a family this holiday season. Your child’s school may have students in need and organize a collection drive. Your church may be collecting coats or serving meals. You could even reach out through social media to find ways to help your community.

I hope this list serves as inspiration. And if you have the means, I encourage you to embrace the spirit of giving.
