Hello ABQ Moms! My name is April Miller, and I am a new contributor to ABQ Mom. Currently, I work full-time for the federal government as a contract specialist. I have a degree in Management from Oklahoma State University (Go Pokes!), and I am working on my master’s degree at the Naval Post Graduate School. I married my husband in 2001 and we have two sons (born in 2002 and 2008).
I grew up in a small town in the high desert of California. In 2009, we left California for Arizona, moved to Oklahoma in 2012, and in 2015 my husband’s job brought us to Albuquerque, New Mexico. Everywhere we’ve lived has had its pros and cons, but Albuquerque is the first place that has felt like home to me. I love the mountains, the surrounding desert, and the stunning views everywhere you look. My late grandfather was born in Las Vegas, New Mexico, and he always spoke about what a wonderful place New Mexico was. He was not wrong! The culture, the food, the diversity, and the people I’ve met make Albuquerque (and New Mexico) truly special.
I did not seek out motherhood initially. I had career goals, I wanted to travel the world with my husband, and maybe eventually have a child. However, my body had other plans. Faced with possible fertility issues, we rearranged our plans and had our first son the year after we got married. Our little family was complete when we had our second son close to 6 years later.
I worked full-time during those first few years of motherhood and made the decision to put my career on hold when we left California. My family has been so supportive during all the transitions we’ve been through. I spent 7 years as a stay-at-home mom, and I’m so grateful for those years shared with my boys. I felt it was time for me to restart my career when we moved to Albuquerque. I’ve been a working-outside-the-home-mom, a stay-at-home mom, a working-plus-going-to-school-full-time mom, and everything in between. Being a mom has given me the confidence to know I can handle each new challenge waiting for me.
I’m delighted to be a part of ABQ Mom. I’m looking forward to learning from everyone and sharing our collective experiences. My blog, Total April, has been my main blog platform since 2018. You can follow me on Instagram where I share my journey with hair loss and wearing wigs, wine, food, pop culture, and fashion.
