Spring Cleaning: My Favorite Places to Donate

1

Spring is finally here! Birds are singing. Trees are budding. And that nagging inner voice about spring cleaning is getting a little harder to ignore. Listen to that voice. Spring is the perfect time to deep clean the house. It’s also a good time to pass along any unwanted belongings. Here are a few of my favorite local places to donate all the things.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a non-profit organization that develops one-on-one mentoring relationships between youths and adults. They are close to my heart because I volunteered as a mentor before I became a parent. It was the first time I experienced the joy of having a positive influence on a child.

Big Brothers Big Sisters have several donation drop-off locations within Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. They accept new or gently used clothing and household items, including small appliances and small furniture. You can schedule a pick-up for larger items.

Savers

Savers is a for-profit thrift store that partners with different local charities. I enjoy donating to them because I know they buy their items from nonprofit organizations. The specific Savers I donate to supports Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central New Mexico.

Spring Cleaning: My Favorite Places to Donate toSavers accepts clothing, electronics, toys, books, jewelry, kitchen items, small appliances, furniture, holiday items, and much more.

Watermelon Ranch

Watermelon Ranch is New Mexico’s largest no-kill animal shelter. We adopted our furbaby, Scooby, from there 10 years ago.

Watermelon Ranch is always in need of donations for the animals they save. They accept pet food, food containers and bowls, cat litter, collars, leashes, grooming equipment, pet carriers, pet beds, and pet toys. Additionally, you can donate cleaning supplies (such as bleach, laundry detergent, paper towels), blankets, towels, and office supplies (such as copy paper, pens, file folders), and working office equipment (such as computers, printers, keyboards). You can even donate a working washer and dryer, which they will happily pick up.

Your Local Facebook Buy Nothing Group

Buy Nothing groups are the epitome of, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Your local group focuses on helping your immediate community. Your donations can save your neighbor money and reduce waste. It really warms my heart to see neighbors helping each other.

You can get rid of almost anything in your Buy Nothing Group. Pogs, Barbies with shaved heads, half a bucket of paint, the souvenir your uncle bought you from Italy five years ago . . . yep. Someone will want it. People won’t think twice if you want to gift slightly expired food, broken electronics, or busted furniture either. Buy Nothing Groups are a great way to gift things you may not be able to give to donate anywhere else. Please ensure donations are in a sanitary condition though.

Happy Spring Cleaning and Happy Donating!

These are my four favorite places to donate to. How do you give your unwanted belongings a second life?

  1. Thanks for sharing these donation places, Jai. We’re really trying to redo our home this spring. In addition to deep cleaning, we want to redo our kitchen cabinets. I can’t wait to get rid of some of the clutter to get to work on the kitchen. We already have a box ready to go to Savers. Thanks again.
