Intentional Living While Stuck at Home

Life Interrupted. 

Our structure and our routines have been severely interrupted. We either have a ton of time on our hands, or we are frantically figuring out how to manage the mounting responsibilities that come with working from home, homeschooling, cleaning, cooking, and managing our distant relationships. 

Most likely we are all handling our new life at home differently. Those of us who are introverts are probably loving every second of the down time.  Those of us who are extroverts are slowly withering away from the lack of touch, lack of personal connection, and lack of human interaction. But what we all may have in common is the challenge of managing our days and living intentionally to get through these uncertain times.

Where Do We Start?

Identify What’s Most Important

Whether your children are little, school age, or returning home from college, we can all agree that we need direction and purpose in our daily living, quarantined or not. 

In order to do this, it’s important to first and foremost decide what’s most important to us. What do we value most? Personal transformation? Getting kids to do their school work online? Being creative? Taking care of ourselves? Accomplishing tasks around the house? Where do we even begin?

What do you and your family value? Exercise? Communication? Organization? A Clean house?  Once you identify what you value most, you can start mapping out ways you can live intentionally for yourself and your family. 

A few tips:

  1. Find an inspirational quote for the day or the week and write it down.
  2. Start each day with purpose. Get up. Get ready. Make that bed!
  3. Write down 5 things you want to accomplish. If getting dressed is one of them, write it down! Learning something new is always fun!
  4. Think about 3 things you can do for others outside your immediate family.
  5. Create a morning and evening routine, even if it’s a small one. It will give structure to everyone in the house and it will provide something for your children to look forward to. Having my child wake up every morning excited to start the day is a pure joy for me. Putting her down every night at seven is also a joy for her. She loves her bedtime routine as much as we do.

Perfectionism Is the Enemy of Intentional Living.

Remember, perfection is the enemy of progress, especially when it comes to intentional living. Set it aside and embrace grace. Don’t let fear get in the way of you living life to its fullest. Even in the confines of our homes, we have the power to make things happen. Embrace these days and make the most of them while you can.
