Mason Jar Ice Cream Recipe

It’s summertime! One of my kids’ favorite summertime staples is ice cream. “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream” is their mantra. We always visit the local shops for their favorite frozen treats. However, that can get a little pricey. I’m not going to lie; I die a little inside whenever I hand over $10 for two scoops of ice cream, especially for flavors like vanilla and chocolate which are my kids’ go-to. This year we decided to try something new: mason jar ice cream.

Mason jar ice cream is ridiculously easy to make. It only has three essential ingredients. There are no machines or special gadgets required. (Less to clean, yay!) You just need your imagination and a freezer-safe mason.

Ingredients

Hefty pinch of salt
1½ tablespoons of sugar
1 cup of heavy cream
Desired mix-ins (optional)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional, but recommended if you don’t add any other mix-ins)
Food coloring (optional)

  1. Add all ingredients into a one-pint mason jar.
  2. Close the lid tightly onto the jar.
  3. Shake the jar until the mixture has doubled in volume, about 5 minutes. Be careful not to overshake! The mixture should be the thickness of brownie batter and stick to the back of a spoon.
  4. Pop in the freezer for 3 hours.
  5. Allow ice cream to soften for ten minutes before scooping.

Mix-In Ideas

There are many creative ways to jazz up your mason jar ice cream. You can even try to copycat your favorite frozen treat. Here are a few ideas:

Bacon
Baking chips
Coconut
Crushed candy
Crushed cookies or brownies
Flavor extracts or syrups
Fresh fruit
Nuts
Pretzels
Peanut butter

Mason jar ice cream is definitely something we are adding to our summertime bucket list. It is a fun and easy activity for kids to enjoy. Mine especially had a blast experimenting with different mix-ins. I hope your family has fun with this recipe as much as mine.

Enjoy!
