Got Beer? Bake Bread!

A loaf of bread with a can of beer next to it on a cutting board.

With people spending more time at home than ever, I’ve noticed a trend on Instagram: so many photos of bread. Between feeling nervous about food shortages and having more time on their hands, I’ve seen so many photos on social media about folks making their own bread. I find it to be quite therapeutic as well.

I wanted to join the figurative crowd, so I looked for yeast when I ordered our groceries. Unfortunately, I came up short wherever I looked. So what did I do?

I learned how to bake bread with beer! When you mix beer and sugar, the yeast from the beer helps the bread to rise. It’s a very simple recipe, and it’s likely you have all or most of the ingredients in your pantry!

No Yeast? No Problem!

Beer Bread Recipe

  • Preheat oven to 375 ºF.
  • Mix dry ingredients, beer, and half of the butter.
  • Pour into a greased loaf pan.
  • Pour the remaining butter over the mixture.
  • Bake for 1 hour, remove from pan, and cool for at least 15 minutes.
