Turmeric for the Soul

As a kid, my mother and grandmother would instantly make me a hot cup of turmeric milk when I caught a cold or make a warm paste and apply it to any wound followed by lots of fussing and lots of hugging. A warm childhood memory!

Turmeric is the crown jewel of spices. It has various health benefits. In fact, it’s been used in India as medicine for centuries. It is also an integral part of Indian cooking. We use it in almost every dish. It is also used for religious purposes in Indian culture.

(Note: like many homeopathic remedies, not all health benefits of turmeric are scientifically proven. However, there is promising research about the spice. More studies are necessary. See these sources for more info: Healthline, WebMD, and Cleveland Clinic. )

Turmeric as a Celebration

Turmeric is so special in the Indian culture that we have our own ceremony to celebrate it. “Haldi” is a vibrant ceremony celebrated during Indian weddings.

A turmeric paste is prepared with other ingredients like sandalwood and rose water. Friends and family apply this paste to the bride and groom in their homes on the morning of the wedding. The venue is adorned with yellow flowers, everyone is adorned in yellow outfits, and the ceremony is followed by traditional songs and dance.

It is believed to keep the bride and groom away from the evil eye, purifies the body, signifies a new beginning, and symbolizes many blessings for the newly married couple.

Turmeric holds the highest honor and is very auspicious in Indian culture.
