New Mexico has welcomed many Afghan refugees who are in need of assistance. Men, women, and children have fled their country most with little to no belongings. The images and videos released still haunt me. I have an overwhelming desire to help. As a mother, I cannot begin to imagine the terror that some may be feeling– the uncertainty of their needs being met and having what they need to start over in a new country. Many of us are wondering how we can help.
At this time of year, I begin to make the switch from summer clothes to fall and winter clothes. I clean out our closets and sort through cabinets and dressers. If you do the same, instead of donating to the closest thrift shop, consider donating to one of the listed donation centers for the Afghan refugees. Thankfully, some of the centers have reached capacity, so I would suggest calling or checking out their website for updates.
