ABQ Mom Guide to Obscure, Fun Holidays in April

0

As each day goes by, it’s becoming more and more likely that we are staying at home for all of April. No school, no enrichment activities, no community events. Just home.

If you are an extrovert like me (or even an introvert that likes a bit of variety in their life), these endless days at home can seem a bit daunting. However, we can break up the monotony by celebrating each day of April in its own little way, thanks to all those wacky National Days (Pigs in a Blanket Day anyone??)

Here are some National Days and Obscure Holidays that are happening this month + ideas on how we can celebrate.

April 1: April Fool’s Day

April 2: National Peanut Butter & Jelly Day

Make some of these yummy sandwiches and have a picnic in your backyard or on the floor of your living room. You could also make a few PB&Js with different types of jelly and jam and see if your kids can guess the flavor.

April 3: National Find a Rainbow Day

Head outside and do a Rainbow Nature Scavenger Hunt.

April 4: National School Librarian Day

In addition to missing their teachers, I’m sure your children are also missing their school librarian. Take a few minutes today to find their email address (usually can be found on the school’s website) and have your child write a short email expressing their adoration and also talking about a book they have read during home learning.

April 5: National Deep Dish Pizza Day

Try making some Chicago style deep dish pizza in your own oven together as a family.

April 6: National Student Athlete Day

Anyone can be a student athlete today when you check out some of these videos from Lil’ Kickers.

April 7: National No Housework Day

Take the day off from chores and cleaning. Make a really big deal about what a cool mom you are and emphasize that it’s only for one day. Come tomorrow, they have to get back to that colorful chore chart you created for this at-home time.

April 8: National Zoo Lovers Day

So many zoos around the country have been creating content for us all to enjoy in the safety of our homes. Check out Dose of Vitamin Z from the ABQ BioPark, Home Safari Facebook Lives from the Cincinnati Zoo, or peek in at the animals at the San Diego Zoo with their Live Cams.

April 9: National Unicorn Day

Anyone else have a daughter obsessed with unicorns? Celebrate the day with a fun, healthy Unicorn Smoothie Bowl for breakfast.

April 10: Encourage a Young Writer Day

Spend some extra time today with reading (check out a few tips on how to spark joy for reading) and then encourage your kid to write an alternative ending to the story, continue the story, or put themselves as the main character. If your child is too young, have them dictate a story to you and you can write it down and they then illustrate.

April 11: National Pet Day

Do you have a family pet? Spend some extra time with that loveable family member. An extra long walk? A special treat? Find a way to show your pet how much you love it.

April 12: Easter

How are you celebrating Easter this year? Ideas for What to Pack in Easter Baskets & Cascarón Eggs

April 13: National Scrabble Day

Play Scrabble with the family (or your spouse if the kids aren’t spelling yet). If you don’t have the board game, you can download Scrabble Go to your phone and play with friends or random opponents.

April 14: Look Up at the Sky Day

Lay outside and watch the clouds go by. You discuss shapes and create stories based on what you see. You could also keep a journal for the day and have your children write down their observations on how the sky changes every few hours.

April 15: National Take a Wild Guess Day

Fill up a glass or clear plastic container with something small (jellybeans, rocks, marbles, etc.) and then have your children take a wild guess at how many are in there. You could also fill the jar together as a family, snap a photo and post on your social media and see which friend has the best guess.

April 16: National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day

This day was made for social distancing! Stay in your PJs all day. Done and done!

April 17: National Haiku Poetry Day

Learn about haikus and then write your own.

April 18: National Animal Cracker Day

Now you don’t have to rack your brain on what’s for snack today. You’re welcome!

April 19: National Hanging Out Day

Why yes, we have been celebrating this day quite a bit lately… Try a virtual hang out with friends.

April 20: National Look Alike Day

Pair up with a quarantine buddy and bring back twin day from school spirit week. If you want to take it to the next level, have everyone in the family look alike today.

April 21: National Kindergarten Day

Do activities today that are all-time favorites in kindergarten. Coloring and play dough!

April 22: Earth Day

April 23: National Picnic Day

Have a picnic in your backyard or in your living room. Here’s one of our favorite sugar cookie recipes in case you wanted to add a little dessert to your family picnic.

April 24: National Pigs in a Blanket Day

Make a pigs in a blanket tasting party where you try a few different dipping sauces and family members can vote on their favorite.

April 25: National Sense of Smell Day

Do a blind smell test with your kids. Break out some herbs and spices from your cabinet and see if they can guess what it is.

April 26: National Pretzel Day

Try making some homemade pretzels or practice some kid-friendly yoga and twist yourself into a pretzel.

April 27: National Tell a Story Day

Spend some extra time today reading together as a family or cuddling up and telling each other stories

April 28: National Superhero Day

Dress up like superheros and run around the house. Then, hang out on the couch and watch your favorite superhero movie together.

April 29: National Peace Rose Day

Get crafty and make a paper rose bouquet together.

April 30: National Hairstylist Appreciation Day

I don’t know about you, but this time at home has really shown me how much I do appreciate my hairstylist. Since we all have been missing the salon trips lately, have your kids style your hair today so a fun, silly activity to keep them entertained while you just sit still.
