Who else is tuned into NBC all day every day for the next two weeks? I love the summer games–the pageantry, the worldwide unity, the once-in-a-lifetime competition, the amazing feats of the human body. And I love watching with my kids.
How about a few snacks to celebrate the summer games? These are easy enough for kids to help with. Keep those little fingers busy and those little tummies full all while cheering on the US athletes.
Check out the four ideas below.
1. Cheesy Popcorn Torches
Ingredients:
Cupcake cones
Cheesy popcorn
Kids can make this one all on their own. They can fill their “torch” to the brim and beyond with “fire” and raise it high to celebrate the summer games.
2. Fruit Rings
Ingredients:
Blueberries
Blackberries
Strawberries (quartered)
Pineapple chunks
Green grapes (halved)
Slice strawberries and green grapes. Then allow kids to form their own rings. The correct order is blue, black, and red on the top from left to right. And then yellow and green on the bottom.
Did you know that there are five rings to stand for the five continents? (North and South America are counted as one.) The rings overlap to symbolize the meeting of athletes from across the world.
3. Jello Pool
Ingredients:
blue Jello
shoelace licorice
teddy bear cookies
Make the Jello according to the directions on the box. Then create pool lanes with the licorice. Add teddy bear cookies as swimmers. Enjoy!
4. Rice Krispie Treats with M&M Rings
Ingredients:
Rice Krispies
Marshmallows
Butter
M&Ms
Mix the Rice Krispie treats according to the directions on the box. Have those little fingers sort the M&Ms into colors. Let them eat the orange ones because you won’t need those. Allow them to form the rings with the candy on top of the Rice Krispie Treats. (Put your perfectionism in a drawer for this one. Your kids can do it!)
