Recently, I got the chance to visit the new immersive biography of Frida Kahlo in Albuquerque. I’m embarrassed to admit that while I recognize the art of Frida Kahlo, I knew very little about her life. What I learned is that the life of Frida Kahlo has grown into mythical proportions for good reason.

The Frida Kahlo Experience, an immersive biography that includes historical photographs, original films, digital environments, artistic Installations, collector’s items, and newly created music that reproduce the most relevant moments of her life, is now open Albuquerque.

She overcame so much in her short life and still managed to achieve icon status. Despite suffering from Polio, a horrific bus accident, miscarriages, and a tumultuous marriage, Frida Kahlo is truly an inspiration when it comes to overcoming adversity.

I was particularly inspired by the symbolism in Frida’s work. She often painted herself because “I am the person I know best,” she once said. (Oh, if we could all aspire to know ourselves well!) In those self-portraits, she painted different versions of herself. Don’t we all feel like there are many versions of us as we evolve and grow?

She also often painted exposed hearts. To create in any way lays bare our souls. Presenting our creativity to the world is most certainly an act of courage.

I adore her love of her Mexican heritage. Through her world-wide travel and rubbing of elbows with the most famous artists on the planet (Picasso etc.), she brought about awareness of and pride for Mexico. I love how she never forgot where she came from and honored her country in her art.

My favorite part of the exhibit was coloring a reproduction of one of Frida Kahlo’s infamous self-portraits, La Rosita. I used all my favorite colors and therapeutically sat for an extended period of time in the dark, cool room reflecting. Then using a special projector, I could project my own image onto the wall and become part of the exhibit.

The Frida Kahlo Exhibit runs through the month of October. Click here to purchase tickets.
