Avoid the Dreaded “I’m Bored” this Summer with Lil’ Kickers

Everyone looks forward to summer vacation, until you’re a few weeks in. You’ve exhausted all of your Pinterest ideas, can’t imagine another day melting in the summer heat, and keep hearing every 15 minutes about how bored your kids are (this of course is in between another snack request)… Don’t wait for that ill-fated day in mid-June. This year, I am thinking ahead and looking at some summer camps around town for my children.

Lil’ Kickers Summer Camp is a flexible option for children ages 3-9 to have fun this summer, while learning soccer skills, along with many other topics like cooking, science, yoga, and art. Parents can sign up their children for half day or full day options (they even offer before and after care) on a weekly basis or for the whole summer. I asked some of our ABQMB Team what questions they wanted to know about summer camps when they are looking for their kids. We then asked these questions to Jeremiah Pena, owner of Lil’ Kickers NM.

What does a typical day at camp look like?

Our before care runs from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Each day varies a bit on the activities we do, but in general we have Field Time from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m and then again at 11:15 a.m until lunch time. Field time is an opportunity for Lil’ Kicker games, scrimmage, or soccer drills.

We also incorporate a science experiment or cooking lesson in the morning. Lunch runs from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. It is followed by art or maybe a walk to the park. We also schedule in some Field Time in the afternoon, as well as an afternoon snack. Some children stay for after care, which runs from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

How are the counselors trained, if at all? Are counselors CPR certified?

Camp counselors are trained by our owner and coordinator. They also go through our great Lil’ Kickers coaching training program. Camp counselors are CPR certified.

What are the activities the campers love most?

I’d say our most popular activities are the Lil’ Kickers games during field time. Most of the kids that come to the camp LOVE our Lil’ Kickers games Alien tag, Avalanche, and small sided soccer scrimmage. We also have a bouncy castle that we set up on the field periodically, and the kids really enjoy that as well.

Is it allergy friendly? Do parents provide food?

We will provide the afternoon snack. When parents register their child for camp, we ask if there are any allergies we need to be aware of. This allergy awareness extends beyond snack time and includes some sun blocks. Campers bring their own lunch each day.

How do they handle conflict amongst the various age groups?

We train counselors on behavior management. We also are trained in child development theory to understand kiddos behavior. For us it is important to separate the child and the child’s behavior. We don’t want our campers to feel badly about figuring life situations out.

What’s the check-in, check-out policy?

We have a check-in process through our computer system we use to run our facility. We will have a front desk manager and camp directress be in charge of check-in and check-out procedures every day. When registering, you are able to specify who is eligible to pick up your child from camp as an added piece of security.

Do counselors go through a background check?

Yes, all of our staff are given a background check. Child safety is our top priority for our summer camps, as well as our regular classes such as Lil’ Kickers and Skills Institute.
