Guide to February in Albuquerque

The new year has come and gone, along with the first month of 2023. I cannot believe February is upon us already. As we slowly make our way back to longer days and warmer nights, take advantage of those mild days and find an event for you this month.

We would like to thank the Family Teacher Organizations at Desert Willow Family School and Coyote Willow Family for sponsoring this Guide to February events in and around Albuquerque.

Desert Willow Family School and Coyote Willow Family School are now accepting applications for lottery admissions at both campuses, Desert Willow on the east side and Coyote Willow Family School on the west side. Interested families are welcome to attend upcoming open houses.

Both schools are tuition-free APS Schools of Choice serving kindergarten through 8th-grade students in multi-grade classrooms with small student-to-teacher ratios. The unique learning model of the Family Schools combines part-time classroom instruction with part-time homeschooling, with options for 50% or 80% in-school time. The schools’ unique curriculum, project-based learning models, and emphasis on critical thinking skills contribute to the high NM-MSSA standardized test scores achieved by students at both locations.

Desert Willow (east side) has one more open house on 2/23. Learn more on their website.

Coyote Willow’s (west side) open houses have passed, but you can learn more about the school on their website.

Rachel was born and raised in New Mexico and on the neighboring Navajo reservation until she was 14. She then attended high school in Connecticut but returned to New Mexico for college because the mountains will always be home for her. She met her husband while working at Dion’s and she attended UNM. They married in Tijeras, NM in 2014 and welcomed their first son in 2016. Their second son arrived in 2021 during the pandemic. Rachel is currently the community engagement coodinator for ABQ Mom as well as Head Community Leader for the Community & Conversations Group. She also stays home with her two boys, one of which homeschools. If she is not busy organizing playdates and meet-ups for local moms, you can find her at a yoga class, a crafting event, or on a run on one of the various trails surrounding Albuquerque. Since entering motherhood in 2016, Rachel's been most passionate about bringing moms together in a safe space and being the mom friend to others that she wished she had when she was a newly minted Albuquerque mom.
